Vivian Maxine (Roland) Fread, daughter of George Glendon Roland and Violet Fern (Harris) Roland was born in Ruthven, Iowa on January 7, 1923. Vivian met the love of her life, Kenneth Earl Fread, after graduating from Ruthven High School in 1941. They were united in marriage on August 30, 1944, while Kenneth was serving in the U.S. Navy. They lived in Norfolk, VA when first married. Five children were born into the family: Roger, Barbara, Nancy, Patricia and Lisa.

Kenneth and Vivian settled in Ruthven, making it their home for their entire life. Vivian was the typical farm wife, caring for the children, cooking, gardening and raising chickens on a farm north of Ruthven. They moved to town after purchasing the Ruthven Produce in 1961.

In the fall of 1970, Kenneth and Vivian took a giant leap of faith in the Ruthven community and built the Lost Island Golf Course on the northeast corner of Lost Island Lake. Vivian labored alongside her husband and others picking rock, building greens and tees, and developing the landscape by planting trees, shrubs and flowers. Vivian ran the clubhouse, serving many hungry golfers great meals and snacks.

Vivian passed away May 27, 2018 at the lakeside home of Craig and Lisa Markley in Ruthven, Iowa, where she had been residing.
