A?Mass of Christian Burial for Elmer Freidel will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Holy Family?Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Father Clem Currans will officiate.

Interment will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Emmetsburg. Military Rites will be rendered by V.F.W. Post #2295 of Emmetsburg. Martin-Mattice Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elmer Freidel, son of Edwin and Pauline (Caba) Freidel, was born Feb. 1, 1928, on the farm near Lesterville, SD. He received his education at Dewey District #17 in Yankton County, SD, graduating in 1946. Following graduation, Elmer joined the National Guard in Sioux Falls and later served in the Korean Conflict where he was stationed stateside.

Elmer met his future wife on a blind date at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. On Feb. 1, 1951, Elmer was united in marriage to Helen Lydon in Sioux City. To this union three children were born. Elmer and Helen had the joy of celebrating their 67th wedding anniversary this past February.

Elmer was a farmer his entire life, retiring at the age of 65 when he and Helen moved into Emmetsburg.

Elmer was a devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and V.F.W. Post #2295.

Elmer and Helen enjoyed traveling around the United States as well as Europe, where they visited the Vatican and Lourdes. Elmer loved going to Canada fishing and was proud of the fact he had gone 26 times taking his family and friends. He always took Helen's homemade chocolate chip cookies with him and would tease his grandchildren that "he was a cookie low" and they would be sure to get him one.

Elmer passed away Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Emmetsburg Care Center, at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; and a brother-in-law, Lorin Gregg.

He is survived by his wife, Helen of Emmetsburg; a daughter, Karen Kauffman and her husband, Gary of Emmetsburg; a son, Dennis Freidel and his wife, Michelle of St. Charles, IL; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; a sister, Delores Gregg of Vermillion, South Dakota; as well as many other relatives and friends.
